Background: Inspiring 32,000 students to succeed
Ector County Independent School District is a West Texas public school district serving approximately 32,000 students across 42 schools. Founded in 1921, the district now oversees 4,000 staff members, including 3,000 teachers. Their two high schools work in unison towards their mission: to prepare every student for success in an ever-changing society.
At the center of Ector County's mission is the Executive Director of Academics, Dr. Kristen Vesley. In her 17 years at Ector County, Dr. Vesley evolved from a classroom teacher to an instructional leader, then campus administrator. Now, she oversees district-wide academics, instructional strategy, and Aware.
Challenge: Turning a New Mandate into Actionable Data
10 years ago, Ector County introduced district-wide short-cycle assessments, asking campuses to administer 8 recurring tests throughout the school year. The process was entirely paper-based, requiring classroom teachers to make hundreds of copies and scan answer documents by hand before results could be reviewed. Not long after, the district expanded this assessment strategy, and the challenge became more than just administering tests. Ector County needed a way to make recurring assessments manageable at scale while turning results into actionable data that informs instruction.
Objectives: Giving 3,000 Teachers More Face Time with Students
As Ector County expanded its assessment strategy, Aware became part of the broader district effort to personalize learning, strengthen standards-aligned instruction, and improve student achievement. Ector County’s District goals included:
- “ECISD will implement innovative instructional models which enable personalized learning for all students.”
- 2020 District Goal 3, Performance Objective 2 - “ECISD will improve the implementation of TEKS-based, rigorous, and relevant curriculum supported by high-quality instructional strategies to 80% for all subjects district-wide by May 2026.”
- 2020 District Goal 1, Performance Objective 6 - “The percentage of students achieving or exceeding the meets standard on state assessments will increase from 32% to 60% by May 2029 across all tested content areas.”
- 2021 Board Goal 1
The Aha Moment: Bringing Data into Hallway Decisions
To support those goals, Dr. Vesley used Aware to move assessment beyond administration and into everyday instructional decisions. When Ector County began treating assessment as an ongoing feedback loop, teachers could use results to adjust instruction, while assessment writers could analyze how individual questions performed and use those insights to build stronger assessments over time.
By starting with a simple need to make assessment administration online and data-backed, Ector County experienced the “Eduphoria Iceberg.” What began as a better way to approach testing at first glance became a scalable system for learning from every assessment and continuously improving on the next.

Results: Moving from Test Administration to Instructional Insight
- 10,018,417 assessments administered in Aware since 2010 builds a foundation of student data to support personalized learning
- 121% Growth in assessments administered expands the district’s ability to monitor learning and standards-aligned instruction
- 23% increase in Quick Views usage per user from 2024 to 2026 puts assessment data more frequently into educators’ decisions
- 93% of graduates met CCM readiness criteria, up from 62.5% in 2019, demonstrating progress toward increased student achievement across tested content areas
Looking Ahead: Building on More Than 15 Years with Aware
After more than 10 million online assessments, Ector County’s educators are never starting from scratch again. They can build on years of existing assessment and performance data to refine their program instead of rebuilding each year.
After more than 15 years, Aware isn’t just a testing tool; it's become part of Ector County’s academic infrastructure, housing assessment data that directs the strategy for more than 3,000 employees.
Now, Dr. Vesley feels confident in preparing students for success in an ever-changing society, with Aware.
